BMW tuner - The BMW M4 Competition from the laboiserie on steroids!

As you know, since 2008 Shiftech has specialized in chiptuning and has positioned itself as a BMW tuner. You regularly see our BMW preparation projects, in particular our very large BMW 335i drift beast project.

In this first part of the video, Médéric and Nicolas from Shiftech show us Lucien Laboiserie's brand-new BMW M4 Competition. Already an ultra-high-performance car from the outset, it still has enormous potential to be optimized.

The kind of BMW preparation we love!

The BMW M4 C is powered by a twin-turbocharged S58 B30 engine officially rated at 510bhp and 650Nm of torque. This engine is a regular at the Shiftech workshops, having already undergone various tunings: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, on M4 CSL, M2 G87, etc.

This engine block is renowned for its excellent response to reprogramming, capable of producing more than the figures announced by BMW.

2h30 to Laboiserie's arrival

The challenge of the day: to carry out a Stage 1 ethanol engine preparation + installation of BMC air filters in less than 2h30 and a gearbox reprogramming (if possible), a deadline imposed by Lulu, who is picking up his machine again in the afternoon.

Unlocking the ECU: the obligatory step!

Before any reprogramming can be carried out, there's one operation that can't be avoided: unlocking the engine ECU. The ECU had to be sent abroad, as very few specialists are capable of carrying out this operation on these recent models. Once the ECU has been 'unlocked', it's time for the magic of Shiftech's bespoke engine mapping.

Original dyno test

As always, to do things properly and before any modifications are made, the BMW M4 Competition is put on the power bench to establish a baseline. This stage is essential to accurately measure the beast's power.

Figures slightly below the manufacturer's claims

After several runs, the measurements show 504.6 bhp and 644 Nm of torque. Slightly less than the 510bhp and 650Nm announced by BMW. This slight discrepancy is common and does not call into question the quality of the S58 engine, which remains a very sound basis for optimum preparation.

E85 conversion and BMC air filters

Once the BMC air filters had been installed, Nicolas, who is used to preparing BMWs, proceeded to flash the engine mapping. Thanks to the ECU being unblocked beforehand, the operation was quick and trouble-free. The Stage 1 flexfuel reprogramming now enables the M4 to run on both SP98 petrol and E85 ethanol.

Why switch to ethanol?

The choice of E85 ethanol is not just an economic one. This fuel has a higher octane rating, which means it delivers more power once the engine mapping has been adapted.

Lucien isn't looking for economy: he wants horsepower, and E85 is an effective solution for achieving the best possible performance.

First tests: towards 700 hp

Once the map had been flashed and the filters fitted, the first engine logs were run. Despite a mixed fill-up (only 15 to 20 litres of ethanol added), the results are very good:

693.8 bhp and 810 Nm of torque with a Flex+ stage

With a full tank of 100% ethanol, the car should logically exceed 700bhp and reach around 850Nm, almost 200bhp more than the original!

Road test: thrills guaranteed

The car is now ready for its first post-prep road test. Nicola and Médéric highlight the driving comfort of the M4, which, despite its colossal power, remains supple and pleasant to drive in normal mode.

Lulu plans to use two driving profiles via the M1 and M2 modes: one for comfort, the other for drift and performance.

Steering, gearbox and mapping are fully customizable. The result is a tailor-made driving experience for both road and track.

Drift test with Lulu: power, style and control

To round off this preparation in style, Lulu took the reprogrammed BMW M4 C for a drift test, in a safe environment. The results were as spectacular as they were predictable: violent acceleration, controlled gliding and pure driving pleasure.

With 693bhp and 810Nm, it's effortless to make the tyres smoke, even in real-world conditions.

Thanks to the new sports tyres, traction remains surprisingly good despite the increase in power. Lulu glides along with an ease that shows that the car, although transformed, remains under total control.

Even if this BMW M4 C Stage 1 is already monstrous, Lulu is clearly announcing what's to come: the project will continue to evolve. The future goal: 1000bhp.
